Critiquing Battlefront 2 feels a bit like beating a dead tauntaun at this point, but there’s a new “farming” method that showcases a pretty core problem with the game, regardless of whether or not the game currently contains microtransactions.
One odd thing that many fans have pointed out is that no matter how well you do in a Battlefront 2 match, you earn roughly the same amount of credits as anyone else. Angry Joe recently reviewed the game on YouTube and showed that his friend, who was the #1 player in a match with 50 kills, earned only 20 more total credits than Joe, the last-place player in the same match with 10 kills, a difference from about 330 to 350 credits.
This isn’t totally unheard of, and sort of could make sense for what’s allegedly supposed to be a more casual shooter (everyone gets a participation trophy!), but players have figured out a way to farm credits without doing anything at all, abusing the current system.
The trick is to take two rubber bands and force your two joysticks to move in opposite directions during a match. This will make your character spin wildly around in circles accomplishing nothing but netting the other, confused team easy kills, but it will allow you to not be booted from the match for inactivity, and yet get almost the same amount of credits as anyone else who is actually playing, because of the way the system is designed.
Players are doing this to go idle and farm for loot boxes to net them Star Cards. It takes a good long while to earn enough credits for crates, and even longer to get the randomized items out of those crates that you actually want, so players are using this as a way to slowly coast to top-tier upgrades without having to slog through the game with more lackluster Star Cards.
It’s of course, kind of stupid, as you’re essentially avoiding playing the game to…play the game later, I guess? If you hate playing enough to do the rubber band trick I’m not sure you’ll enjoy it even when you do have the right Star Cards, but the point is that this tactic shouldn’t exist at all.
Some important points about this:
- There should be a way to detect players that are spinning in circles not even firing their weapons and kick them.
- There should be a system in place where the rewards between first and last place are more than an 6-7% difference in credits earned.
- This does still have to do with microtransactions to a certain extent, because the grind-heavy loot box/Star Card system was built in the first place to support microtransactions, which no longer exist. If the system was redesigned in a more rewarding, less loot-box centric way, perhaps players wouldn’t resort to this.
There is a long laundry list of changes Battlefront 2 needs to make, but this one seems pretty urgent, even among the other issues. Players going AFK and not getting kicked in order to idle farm loot boxes is bad for everyone involved, and needs to be rectified. I suppose the more people do this, the faster it will get fixed, so rubber band away. I don’t imagine any punitive measures for players who do this are coming, as DICE won’t want to rock that boat, but hopefully it is fixed soon, and other changes are made that address the root of why this is happening in the first place.
