To gain mainstream media attention, some video game companies have taken extreme measures to advertise their upcoming games. Did You Know Gaming’s recent video compiles some of the stranger and baffling examples of some of these bizarre marketing stunts.
This includes how Nintendo competed in a virtual cow milking contest against a farm in Vermont. It occurred after the farm had sent a letter to Nintendo, saying that the company had taken “all the challenge” out of milking in the game.
Another is how Capcom’s marketing campaign for Resident Evil 6 included sending photos of fake crime scenes to the press, portraying mangled and dismembered bodies of dummies. Capcom even sent journalists freshly packaged meat from supermarkets, made to look like human remains in the packaging, as well as created a fake human flesh butcher shop to promote the game.

The clip only touches upon a handful of marketing stunts. Another interesting one includes how EA hired actors to stage a protest against 2010 game Dante’s Inferno, to help promote the title at E3. Actors walked around with signs saying phrases such as “Trade your PlayStation for a PrayStation.” Last year, IO Interactive also had a strange publicity stunt, where they placed bloodstains in public bathrooms in London.
