‘Macross Delta’ will have a movie released next year.

With the TV series for Macross Delta finishing at the end of last year, Macross fans can now look forward to a new movie out early next year.

Called Macross Delta The Movie: Passionate Walkūre the key visual for the film shows what looks like a new fully armored version of the VF-31.

The last and similarly fully armored variable fighter we had was the VF-25 in Macross Frontier so it will be interesting to see how the setup will change for the VF-31.

This is because the VF-31 is based on the YF-30 from the PS3 game Macross 30 and had a very different configuration in terms of a central missile pod down the axis of the fighter.

In any case, this kind of update to variable fighter hardware in various Macross movies is a long-running tradition and dates back to the original VF-1S Strike Valkyrie variant from the film Macross: Do You Remember Love?

As for what changes will be made to the story in this new movie version, not much is clear. The two Macross Frontier movies effectively compressed and re-told the story from the original TV series, with a variety of changes obviously.

My guess is that this Macross Delta movie might try something similar but it will be interesting to see what’s changed in this movie version compared to the original series.

When I spoke with Shoji Kawamori early last year about Macross Delta, he was upbeat about the prospects for the series. The fact we have a movie on the way likely means the series did decently and that makes me happy.

Advance tickets for the Macross Delta movie go on sale in Japan on December 16 but it will be released in theaters on February 9 next year.

In the meantime, you should check out Macross Delta Scramble on the PS Vita, as it is thoroughly excellent.
