SNK Has Had A Very Good Year And It Is Probably Due To The Switch

Classic games like ‘Garou: Mark of the Wolves’ really show off the local multiplayer setup on the Switch.

In a recent financial report for SNK, it seems the company has done very well this year and that likely means the Switch has had a big part in that.

To break down the figures a bit, from the Summer of 2016 to the Summer of 2017 SNK saw sales amounting to 4.281 billion yen (or around $38.4 million), which was a marked jump over the previous year’s sales of 3.203 billion yen (or around $28.7 million).

Now, many people are citing the release of The King of Fighters XIV in regards to this big jump in sales but I think this has more to with the ACA NeoGeo game releases, specifically those on the Switch.

This is because the ACA NeoGeo range has been available on both the PS4 and Xbox One for a while now but SNK didn’t see similar jumps in sales prior to this year. What’s more, the Switch was released this March and classic NeoGeo games, such Garou: Mark of the Wolves (shown above), are a fantastic fit for the local multiplayer setup the Switch affords.

So with that in mind, this jump in SNK’s sales looks a lot like it has to do with the Switch and the fact it can leverage classic NeoGeo games, especially those of the multiplayer variety.

Considering that these type of ports are relatively inexpensive and quick to make, it makes sense that the margins on these releases would be pretty decent for SNK and that the cumulative effect of all these NeoGeo games has helped to significantly improve the company’s fortunes this year.

Not to mention that without Nintendo’s own Virtual Console service on the Switch, SNK has been cleaning up in the interim. It also goes to show that people still want to play SNK’s back catalog of games and by extension the innate demand for something like Virtual Console on the Switch.

In any case, SNK is looking a lot healthier than it did a few years ago and what with console like the Switch championing the NeoGeo’s excellent library of games, it genuinely looks like the future is now for the company.

Now if only SNK would re-release the amazing Viewpoint.
