It seems that the Dark Knight will be transported back to ancient Japan to fight the Joker in a new anime movie called Batman Ninja and, yes, it looks like it could be rather magnificent.
Much of the lore behind Batman ties both directly and indirectly into the stealthy world of ninjas. The Nolan movies explored this quite overtly and it has been somewhat of an underlying theme within the overarching Batman mythos for a while.
So to have a new anime wrap its arms around that ninja setup is fantastic to see.
From the new trailer released (shown below), it seems that the anime will use a fair amount of 3DCG for the characters, which is a bit of surprise. However, this looks to be coupled with traditional 2D animation for the effects and other environmental aspects.
The studio behind this is Kamikaze Douga and they have a solid list of credits behind them, especially when it comes to CG animation. They have also worked on some of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime over the years and those are known to be similarly ostentatious in a visual sense.
It is also worth pointing out that Koichi Yamadera is voicing Batman here and in case you don’t know who that is, he was also the original Japanese voice for Spike in Cowboy Bebop and Beerus in Dragon Ball Super. Admittedly, he also voiced Gyunei Guss in the movie Gundam: Char’s Counterattack but we don’t talk about that.
Yamadera is a veteran voice actor though and I think he will make a great Dark Knight, especially considering the setting of Batman Ninja.
In any case, for a project that has reportedly been in production for three years, Batman Ninja is looking very good indeed and will be finally released early next year.
